hwVPS: Reliable, Fast, Flexible,
Economical - Pick four.
We've taken customer feedback from nearly 7 years of
VPS hosting and rolled it into the ultimate VPS. As the culmination of nearly 8
months of planning, design, coding, testing, tuning, and retesting, the hwVPS plans have
been built from the ground up to deliver restful-sleep reliability, adrenaline-junky
performance, geek-lust software flexibility, and cavernous capacity at a price that makes
the hwVPS a giddy-accountant bargain.

Points:
"Any OS"
Guarantee. We currently support CentOS, FreeBSD, Windows Server 2008, Debian, and
Ubuntu Server Edition. Not only can you choose from any of those OS, you can later change
to any other OS we offer whenever you like, up to once a month with no additional cost.
Please note that some OS require higher resource levels than offered in the lowest
resource plans and will not be available for those plans. Supported OS are setup in one
business day. Orbitally
fast and Texasly big Hybrid Storage. A portion of
your disk quota runs on blistering fast 15K RPM SAS RAID10 storage while the remainder
uses American-fast-food-supersized SATA RAID6 storage. They show as two different drives
in your hwVPS.
Redundant Redundancy so you can rest restfully (aka Boss
Silencer). Two power input breakers. Two power cords. Two hot-swap power
supplies. Multiple hot-swap cooling fans. Two multi-core CPUs. Error-correcting RAM.
Redundant hot-swap hard drives. Two external storage controllers. Two 12Gbps external
storage cables to two external RAID modules. Two 1Gbps auto-failover links to two
different switches in the local network. That's just the server, which is deployed in a
redundant pair with another server just like it. Just wait until you hear about our network network.
Moron
Insulation. Let's face it. Some other guy can come along, buy a dramatically
undersized account, configure MySQL or some other hog to use twice the RAM he actually has
and pound his swap space like a flame trench during a Space Shuttle launch. With a typical
VPS, you would be hosed because that heavy swap usage by the other guy would cause storage
performance across the board to tank, killing your storage performance even though you had
nothing to do with it. With the Advantagecom hwVPS, swap is on a completely different
storage controller and dedicated 15K RPM SAS RAID1 swap disks, so the other guy's swap
usage will have no impact on your storage performance. Further, we intentionally limit the
size of swap included with each account so it still functions as an emergency stop-gap
when you need it, but small enough that serious memory overruns are stopped cold before
they can monopolize the swap storage performance. You shouldn't have to suffer for the
other guy's ineptness.
Evil-cackle-worthy Downtime Immunity. Optional active-backup High Availability clustering keeps
your hwVPS running through any scheduled or unscheduled node downtime and protects you
from boss wrath. Uptime guarantees tell you how you will be compensated in the rare event
of unscheduled outages, but they don't cover downtime due to scheduled
maintenance. Clustering gives you hard uptime,
regardless.
Near Native Performance. The hwVPS CPU and I/O
virtualization is implemented with hardware-based processor extensions and paravirtualized
network/storage drivers for optimal performance. The hwVPS storage is implemented as real
device backed storage, not slothly file-based virtual storage found with competing VPS
solutions.
Upgrade
in place. Scale as needed from the smallest hwVPS to our largest dedicated
server without moving files, changing DNS entries, or server reconfiguration.

Since unmanaged hwVPS accounts include
server administrator or root access, we strongly recommend that you have experience
administering a server if you plan to administer your hwVPS from anything other than the
free included control panel (BlueOnyx). BlueOnyx is only offered with hwVPS running CentOS
32 bit. While our expert staff love helping customers learn how to use our services, it is
expected that you have at least a basic familiarity with the concepts involved with
running and maintaining a web site when choosing an unmanaged hwVPS plan, even if you
intend to use the free included control panel (BlueOnyx). If you do not know how to
administer a server, please choose a managed hwVPS plan.
Disk space available for user storage after
filesystem formatting and operating system installation will vary by operating system.
Between 150MiB and 20GiB of disk space will be used by operating system files depending on
the operating system selected. Windows Server 2008 Datacenter Edition requires the most
disk space at approximately 20GiB. The operating system will always be installed on the
"Fast Storage" portion of the disk space, so please be sure you have enough
space left over for your intended use of the hwVPS. If you need help selecting the right
hwVPS for your needs, please contact our friendly sales staff.
What is High
Availability clustering?
Clustering involves setting up multiple servers to function as a single
server. "High Availability" clustering is a type of clustering that keeps a
service (an hwVPS in this case) running even if a server or other components in the
cluster system fail. This involves additional software and redundancy on all hardware
components from the input electrical circuit breakers, the servers and all their internal
components, and all the way to the network switches to which the servers connect. The
software automatically detects outages on any node and moves clustered services from that
node to another node that is still functioning.
In practice, if you have a High Availability
clustered hwVPS, you won't have to wait with your service down for an unknown amount of
time while we fix a broken hardware node or perform scheduled maintenance. In the event of
scheduled maintenance, a High Availability clustered hwVPS will be transparently migrated
to another node with no service interruption at all. Really! Not even a reboot of the
hwVPS! In the event of an unscheduled outage, a High Availability clustered hwVPS will
experience 1 to 2 minutes of downtime while the outage is detected and the hwVPS is booted
on another node that is still functioning.
Why does it cost more? There
are several reasons. A somewhat obvious reason is that we have to reserve double the
server capacity for every High Availability clustered hwVPS. This ensures that there is
always the right amount of server capacity even if a node has failed. Setup and
configuration of a High Availability clustered hwVPS takes more staff time. Supporting and
troubleshooting a High Availability clustered hwVPS requires a higher level of expertise
in our staff, so they have received additional training at an expense to us. Nearly 1,000
man hours were put into designing, implementing, and testing the system in such a way that
High Availability clustering would work properly. Expertise to do that work does not come
cheaply. That investment of time is the single largest expense in the entire system.
Finally, there is a lot of additional investment in hardware and software to properly
deploy High Availability clustering and we need to be able to recoup that investment.
* Fast Storage vs.
Big Storage: Fast can mean many different things depending on the context. For those that
crave details, here is a breakdown of the differences between the two types of storage.
** The "Big Storage" portion of the included
disk space is not recommended for databases or heavy email spool/queue usage. The
"Fast Storage" portion of the disk space is designed for those types of uses.
Please be sure your database and/or email usage will fit within the space allocated from
"Fast Storage" after accounting for the operating system, which is always
installed in the "Fast Storage" portion of the disk space.
*** "Managed"
can mean different things to different people. Most hosting companies don't take the time
to define what you get when you buy a "managed" hosting account. We do. Note,
however, that the same applies to "unmanaged" hosting accounts.
"Unmanaged" hosting accounts we sell are often much more "managed"
than the "unmanaged" hosting accounts sold by the competition. In the table
below DIY = Do It Yourself.
